Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Supplement

Due to the increased nutritional demands placed on a mother during pregnancy and breastfeeding it can be difficult to attain adequate levels of several key nutrients by food alone such as Folic acid, Vitamin D or Omega-3. Research has shown that the majority of pregnant women in Ireland do not have a healthy balanced diet and are therefore at risk of not meeting their daily nutrient requirements.1 Aptamil nutritionists have developed Aptamil Pregnancy & Breastfeeding food supplement which includes a combination of important vitamins and minerals to help support a healthy balanced diet at this key time.

Folic Acid:

An essential nutrient in the months before becoming pregnant and in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects e.g. spina bifida.

The Department of Health recommends that you take a supplement containing 400μg of folic acid every day. Each Aptamil Pregnancy & Breastfeeding tablet contains the recommended level of 400μg.

Vitamin D:

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient important for calcium absorption. However research has shown poor vitamin D status amongst adults in Ireland, as the main source of Vitamin D is the action of sunlight on the skin. Dietary sources are limited to oily fish (e.g. herring, mackerel), eggs and some fortified milks, cereals and margarines.

Each Aptamil Pregnancy & Breastfeeding tablet provides 10μg, the recommended daily intake while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Omega 3:

The Department of Health recognise that Omega 3 is important for the normal development of your baby's brain and eyes2. The main dietary source is oily fish (e.g. mackerel, herring, and trout). As it can be difficult to get enough Omega 3 from your diet alone you may want to consider using

Aptamil Pregnancy & Breastfeeding capsule, it contains 200mg Omega 3 DHA, which can help you meet your daily requirements as part of a balanced diet.

Calcium:

When pregnant or breastfeeding your requirement for calcium increases by 50%. Calcium is important for healthy bones and teeth and the best dietary sources are dairy foods.

Aptamil Pregnancy and breastfeeding tablet provides 200mg calcium to help in combination with a balanced diet to meet your daily requirements.

Not all supplements are the same, please ensure that you check the labels and if taking another branded supplement check to ensure they include these important nutrients - calcium, vitamin D and omega 3.

Available from your local pharmacy.
